On Monday, April 20, 2026, at the Church of Saint Anne in the Testasecca district of Caltanissetta, Sicily, a commemorative discussion was held in memory of Alberto Maira, a committed Catholic and witness of our times. This moment of deep participation was promoted by the Section of Caltanissetta of the Delegation of Western Sicily of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, in collaboration with Alleanza Cattolica and the IPAB Testasecca Institute, to pay tribute to a figure who left a profound mark on the cultural, social, and religious life of the area.
Opening and moderating the meeting was the journalist Valerio Cimino, Knight of Merit with Silver Star, who outlined the human and intellectual profile of Alberto Maira: a man of deep faith, endowed with a noble spirit and remarkable human and cultural sensitivity, and former Representative for Caltanissetta of the Delegation of Western Sicily. Born in 1956, Maira distinguished himself as a man of faith and action, committed to spreading the Social Doctrine of the Church, an author and cultural promoter, always attentive to contemporary issues and actively engaged in public discourse.
His passing, which occurred on Easter Sunday 2025, gives this testimony an even deeper and more symbolic meaning: on the day of the Resurrection of the Lord, he concluded his earthly journey, leaving a spiritual and cultural legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him and shared in his commitment.
The Delegate for Western Sicily, Nob. Prof. Avv. Salvatore Bordonali, Knight Grand Cross of Justice, emphasized that “Alberto based his commitment on the notion of the ‘social kingship’ of Jesus, which he was able to convey not only in his numerous publications but also in his concrete presence among us, as Representative for Caltanissetta, offering a luminous example of Christian and chivalric life.”
Among the speakers, the Councillor for Public Education of the Municipality of Caltanissetta, Vincenzo Lo Muto, recalled Maira’s more personal dimension: “A person of extraordinary humanity, capable of leaving a deep impression on anyone he met, thanks to a generous, sincere personality rich in values.”
The President of the Testasecca Institute, Arch. Luigi Maria Gattuso, highlighted Maira’s concrete commitment in the management of the institution, of which he had been President, emphasizing his dedication and sense of responsibility.
Giacomo Scalzo, Director General of the Department for Health Activities and Epidemiological Observatory of the Regional Health Authority of Sicily, stressed the “great moral stature” that characterized Maira’s entire human and professional journey.
Matteo Caruso, Provincial Regent of Alleanza Cattolica and a Constantinian Knight of Office, placed Maira’s figure within a broader context: “Aware of the centuries-long process of dechristianization aimed at building a world without God, Alberto Maira consistently opposed this drift, acting as an authentic conservative and counter-revolutionary through the promotion and application of the principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church.”
Giuseppe Anzalone, Representative for Caltanissetta of the Delegation of Western Sicily and Knight of Merit with Silver Star, finally recalled Maira’s central role within the Constantinian Order: “He was a fundamental point of reference for our Sacred Militia, both locally and within the Delegation, promoting initiatives and offering valuable contributions in the social, historical, cultural, and political fields, always guided by an authentically Catholic vision.”
Concluding the meeting, Hon. Alessandro Pagano revisited some elements of Maira’s thought on the theme of freedom: “Freedom is not license… the anarchic logic of ‘I feel like doing something and I do it’ does not work… Freedom is based on two pillars: conscience, oriented toward the good, and divine law, which enlightens and shows the way… From this dual foundation arises the meaning of our life, in the freedom that God gives us.” And again: “God indeed has a plan for us, but above all with us.”
The discussion concluded in a reflective and participatory atmosphere, marked by gratitude and vivid remembrance. The memory of Alberto Maira remains inseparably linked to a coherent witness, lived in fidelity to faith and in concrete commitment to the service of the community.
