As part of the recently concluded World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2024, the CARDIOMeT Clinic in Catanzaro is organizing a free screening day on Saturday 7 December 2024 aimed at patients at high risk of developing diabetes, in order to identify this silent and lethal cardiovascular risk factor early. As in previous years, the free screening is aimed in particular at needy people who cannot access, for various reasons, medical visits and preventive care offered by the Regional Health Service. This laudable initiative in the field of prevention and health, like the others carried out in recent months in various Calabrian cities, enjoys the patronage of the Delegation of Calabria and the Royal Commission for Italy of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George.
Diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, is a chronic non-communicable metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, i.e. high levels of glucose in the blood, due to an alteration in the quantity or mechanism of action of insulin. Insulin, a hormone produced by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and essential for conveying the glucose present in the blood into the cells, therefore plays a key role in the onset of diabetes. Especially when left untreated, diabetes can be associated with various vascular complications, such as macroangiopathy, a particularly serious and early form of atherosclerosis, and microangiopathy, an alteration of the capillary vessels which has repercussions above all on the retina, kidneys and nerves.
The specialist visits will be carried out, completely free of charge, on 7 December 2024 at the CARDIOMeT Center in via Lucrezia della Valle 19/39 in Catanzaro (subject to telephone booking on 344 419 90 39 or via e-mail to cardiometcz@ gmail.com), curated by volunteer medical specialists, who offer their collaboration free of charge to promote people’s health.
This day of health prevention is organized by Dr. Gaetano Morabito of the CARDIOMeT Center, thanks to the interest and collaboration of the Representative for the Upper Ionian Cosentino of the Constantinian Order’s Calabria Delegation, Antonio Coiro, Knight of Office.
The interim Delegate for Calabria, H.E. the Marquis Pierluigi Sanfelice di Bagnoli, Knight Grand Cross of Justice, Lieutenant for Southern Peninsular Italy of the Royal Commission for Italy, expressed – as he already has on the occasion of similar previous initiatives – his appreciation for the “laudable initiative, which continues in the wake of closeness and assistance to the least and forgotten among us who have difficulty accessing care. Prevention is critical to avoiding pathologies from becoming chronic and making patients’ lives much more difficult.”
