From Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 May 2025, a group of knights, dames and postulants of the Western Sicily Delegation of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George participated in a pilgrimage in one of the most beautiful parts of Lazio, Tuscia and Sabina, visiting places of great spiritual and historical merit. Among the most important stops: the evocative Civita di Bagnoregio, known as “the dying city”; the majestic Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola; the Palazzo dei Papi and the Church of the Santissimo Trinità-City Sanctuary of the Madonna Liberatrice in Viterbo. This itinerary was enhanced by the warm welcome and the precious support of the local Delegation of Tuscia and Sabina led by the Nob. Avv. Roberto Saccarello, Knight Grand Cross of Jure Sanguinis with Gold Star, who joined the pilgrims every day.
There was an unforgettable stay at the magnificent Augustinian convent complex of the Holy Trinity in Viterbo, where one can rest after days spent immersed in culture and spirituality. The pilgrims, welcomed by the Prior Father Vito Logoteto, O.S.A., were able to refresh themselves in the Cenacolo room, the ancient refectory of the Augustinian Fathers. The large hall is accessed by passing through a peperino portal, on which the phrase Cum sobrietate is engraved. The frescoes, painted by the Nini family, date back to the end of the fifteenth century. At the back there is a canvas with the Last Supper of Jesus. Among the Augustinians depicted, Blessed Giacomo da Viterbo and Egidio Antonini can be recognized.
On Sunday 18 May 2025 at 11.30 am, in the Church of the Holy Trinity – City Sanctuary of the Madonna Liberatrice, a diocesan jubilee church, adjacent to the Augustinian convent, a solemn Mass was celebrated in union with confrères from the Constantinian Order’s Tuscia and Sabina Delegation, at the conclusion of the pilgrimage. The Mass was presided over by the Prior Father Vito Logoteto, O.S.A., and the concelebrant was FatherDavide Calantoni, Chaplain of Merit with Silver Star.
The Church of the Holy Trinity
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Viterbo is the principal church of the Delegation of Tuscia and Sabina. It was built by the Augustinian Hermits in Gothic style in 1256 and rebuilt in 1745. In it the Madonna is particularly honored, invoked with the Title of Liberator because of the prodigious events of May 28, 1320 and for having liberated the People of Viterbo during wars and calamities over the centuries.
Since the establishment of the Delegation, which took place in 2002 by decree of the HRH Infante Carlos of Spain, Prince of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duke of Calabria, 31st Grand Master of the Constantinian Order, the Constantinian knights have been committed to spreading the devotion of the Madonna Liberatrice and to participating every year in the traditional procession in her honor.
The Constantinian Chapel
The Constantinian Chapel, where the 16th century wooden Crucifix, restored by the Delegation, is venerated, was inaugurated on 8 April 2018, in the presence of the Grand Master, HRH Prince Pedro of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Duke of Calabria, Count of Caserta, and Head of the Royal House of the Two Sicilies.
The Delegate for Western Sicily conveys his thanks
The pilgrimage left a deep mark in the hearts of all the participants, demonstrating once again the value of the shared journey in faith, culture and brotherhood.
In underlining the importance of this experience, the Delegate for Western Sicily, Nob. Prof. Avv. Salvatore Bordonali, Knight Grand Cross of Justice, declared: “I am very satisfied with the success of the pilgrimage which – as expected – also had the objective of fostering a deeper understanding between the participants. These pilgrimages prove extremely useful, both for the Knights and Dames, and for the Postulants, since they offer a precious opportunity to fraternize and make the relationships between the members of our Order more authentic and sincere.
However, we cannot conclude without expressing heartfelt thanks to our brothers of the Delegation of Tuscia and Sabina led by the Nob. Attorney Roberto Saccarello, Knight Grand Cross of Jure Sanguinis with Gold Star, to our Father Davide Calantoni, Chaplain of Merit with Silver Star, who accompanied the group physically and spiritually with great dedication, and to all the knights who contributed to its organization.”
