The Delegation of Western Sicily of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George, with the guidance of the Delegate, Nob. Prof. Salvatore Bordonali, Knight Grand Cross of Justice, offered dinner on Tuesday 12 March 2024 to less fortunate families at by the Boccone del Povero Institute, in via Pindemonte 3 in Palermo.
The Boccone Institute of the Poor in Palermo was founded by Giacomo Cusmano, who was born in Palermo on 15 March 1834, graduated in Medicine and Surgery and established himself as the “Doctor of the Poor”. On 23 May 1880 he founded the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Poor and in 1887 that of the Missionary Servants of the Poor or Opera del Boccone del Povero, a male religious pontifical institute, whose members are popularly called Bocconisti or Cusmaniani.
The meal cooked by the Constantinian knights included a typical Sicilian recipe, penne with broccoli, a cauliflower sauce with anchovies, raisins, pine nuts and double tomato concentrate, followed by sausage and potatoes.
The slight “effort” of the preparation was enlivened by the “spectacular” panelle and croquettes of Maestro Totò, prepared for the participating knights.
Speaking during the dinner, the Treasurer of the Delegation Dr. Gastone Brizzi, Knight of Merit with Silver Star, declared that in the evening the meals were distributed without any bureaucratic filter for the use of the canteen. Anyone in need, in a totally anonymous way, can show up at the Institute and take advantage of the canteen for him and his family.
At the end of the day, after having served meals and rearranged the refectory for the following day, the person who is in charge of the Delegation’s pilgrimages as well as being an excellent cook, Attorney Carlo Varvaro, Knight Jure Sanguinis, expressed the hope that the participation of the Constantinian Order in similar events in the other provincial sections of the Delegation can be increased, as already has been done for Caltanissetta. The Delegate thanked the participating knights and the coordinator of the event for the Institute, Dr. Antonio Tocco, and declared that he would urge the section managers to do so.
